Service videos – Lenovo’s best kept secret ?

February 20, 2008 Post a Comment (15 Comments)

Planning to do some work on your Lenovo PC?    Maybe you are adding some memory, upgrading the hard disk to a larger one, or perhaps exchanging one model of wireless card for another and you really want to see exactly how to open the system up and install or replace the particular component.

Looking for some guidance on how to proceed before you break out the screwdrivers?

Many of our long time customers are already familiar with, and know the value of the Hardware Maintenance Manuals available on the support site.  These handy reference materials provide exploded views, and lists of part numbers for all the components of the system.

Here is an example of the HMM for the Thinkpad X61.    Now suppose you wanted the benefit of more detail, and the ability to actually see the system taken apart step by step.   Some video would be really helpful…

The Lenovo Service & Support Training website provides detailed videos covering assembly and disassembly of many Lenovo systems, which I didn’t know was available until just the other day.

If you plan to install upgraded hardware, perform service yourself, or are just curious about the inner workings of your Lenovo system,  these videos are an invaluable resource.

Check out the site tour video to get a feel for the breadth and depth of the material available, or just browse through the index.  There are even sections covering popular ThinkVantage software applications like Access Connections and Rescue and Recovery.

These videos may well be one of Lenovo’s accidentally best kept secrets.   Enjoy!

helped tremendously when i had to change the hard drive inside my ThinkPad X40. the sales representative sent me an email with a link to the video. definitely a best kept secret, but why relegate it to that status?

  • Bob says:

I’ve seen that before, just for the X40.

I did see something interesting about screws: “Nylon coated” Is that the little blue dab of paint?

Also, since I dont really have extras, I reuse them a lot. Even though I’m not supposed to. It would be nice to have an option to get a lttle bag of screws with every new computer?

Another thing…how do you generate the images used in the documentation? Are they hand drawn or do you have a photoshop process or someat?

  • Snife says:

Bob, the blue (or red/white in some cases) is the nylon coating, in theory it creates a better fitting screw but generally, if the screws that have been removed are screwing back into the same parts, then it will make very little difference whether new screws are used or not.

  • Bob says:

    Thanks, I didn’t know that.

It would be really good if the videos could be in a non-flash format. I tried to visit the video site but it wanted to install Flash. Even Youtube would be a better option than having a flash only site as there are download programs for Youtube.

The above URL is my blog post on this topic.

Good work on providing such great documentation!

The Lenovo as also the former times IBM “Hardware Maintenance Manuals” (HMM) have always been one of the most valuable service information resources, beside part assembling/disassembling service training and help videos etc. Together with the hardware model specific driver matrix download overviews, some of the other available part lists and white papers, all this offers a great valuable degree on service & support informations.

I too always wondered that only few people were aware of the HMM and video information and thus that most users/customers even never did know that such valuable information exists for their direct access. – Most people usually still have always to be pointed by other much more experienced users to these. So we can indeed speak here from some sort of good kept secret

Visitors to lenovoservicetraining.com will find the ThinkPad x300 present today !!!

Russell … we decided on flash / flv content after a great deal of research, considering video quality, performance & file size. If you choose to install flash to view the site; under ‘User Help” you will find a downloadable exe that will afford the ability to view flv’s off line. All of the video’s present on the site are downloadable.

  • Yves-Alexis Perez says:

As far as I know, Russel uses GNU/Linux Debian. So an exe won’t really help.

  • David Brenchley says:

Interesting .. guess I have some work to do ..

  • David Brenchley says:

after some cursory research it seems you linux folks have some hoops to jump through.
http://flowplayer.org/ and http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ seems to offer the simplist solutions.

David Brenchley: I’m missing the possibility to download videos in System Disassembly of T60. It wouldn’t be a great deal if all of them were available in other sections, where download option is present, but not all of them are, specifically the LCD disassembly. And I’ve really missed 14″ LCD disassembly :)

Btw there’s a possibly an error(?) in HMM of T60, in the contents of Miscellanous screws set. The 3-5mm long screws didn’t match against it, I’ve found out what I’ve really got by matching some screw to one taken from my T60 14″ (e.g. in bottom part of LCD front bezel) and looking up what HMM says there should be used – that did match.

    Ender ..
My apologies for not seeing your comments sooner, … focused on other priorities.
For future reference should anyone note issues w/ the Lenovo Service Training website please contact me directly .. brenchle (AT) lenovo (DOT) com and I’ll be sure to respond more quickly.
In any case .. you are correct the LCD dissasembly / re-assembly videos were present but not in the area that affords the ability to download. This has been addressed. THANK YOU for pointing out the error.
With regard to your comments about the HMM, unfortunately that’s outside my scope .. I will pass your comments along .

Maman – unfortunately this is not a resource for technical support. I would suggest either contacting your local support channel or visiting our peer-to-peer support community at http://forums.lenovo.com
