“Pocket Yoga” Concept

Guest blogger, Johnson Li, Director of Lenovo’s Beijing Inovation Center, speaks out about a concept that recently emerged on the tech blogs. I want to thank him for sharing this concept with the Design Matters audience.  David

Last week some buzz was created by a photograph that someone snuck out of our Beijing design studio. The picture was of a pocket-sized PC we developed about two years ago, well before the current netbook craze and the introduction of a similar form factor by one of our competitors. Since the design has been shown in public in the past and received some attention, I thought it might be of some interest to discuss the design inspiration and share some photos and drawings of the device.

We in Lenovo’s Beijing design center refer to this concept as the “Pocket Yoga,” an extension of an award winning design we’ve shown in public based on a folding concept inspired by the practice of yoga by one of our New Zealand-based designers. The full Yoga concept was a folding notebook with a detachable keyboard. The system unit was covered in leather.

Pocket Yoga is shaped just like a large wallet. You can easily put it into your pocket. The proportion of length and width is about the maximum size for a notebook that can fit into a pocket, or, as we like to say, it is the smallest pocket notebook.

The surface is covered with wallet leather, so it is soft and comfortable to put it into a pocket or a bag. Leather can transform a cold, plastic or metal machine into something warm and considerate, transforming it into something friendlier and more like a trusted and valued possession. Always there, always waiting.

The “pocket Yoga” inherits the 360-degree soft hinge design from the Yoga notebook. The soft hinge supports three modes, locking into each position. I feel that the hinge mechanism was one of the major innovations behind its usability and new experience for the user.

When you open it to a normal angle, it can be used as a laptop. Its full-function keyboard gives you enough space to type, so your hands won’t be crowded or compromised. Or you can open it 360 degrees, folding the top cover back to the base, and it becomes the tablet notebook. In the tablet mode the user can read,  draw with the special pen, or surf the web. All in all, we believe this configuration gives the user the option to use the device as a hand-held notebook, giving more space than a mobile phone, along with the ability to type with more powerful multi-media features.

Detail always determines the excellence of a new configuration. “Pocket Yoga” has a elegant belt which wraps around the whole body.   The “belt” is not a simple decoration, because when it is removed it becomes  a mouse. It is the type of surprise that we designers want to give our customers. Imagine whenever in formal or casual occasion, it will become your best partner to show your high taste and satisfies your office or entertainment needs.

The “Yoga” notebook experiment is finished, but the stories of new developed products from Lenovo’s design teams are always happening. Innovation never stops. Next time, which story we will share with you? Who knows?

Johnson Li

This design would do very well right now. Netbooks are popular, mostly because of the easy format/portability. I see students and co-workers everywhere using netbooks. Heck, I probably buy two of them.

I like that “Pocket Yoga” Concept, which somehow seemed to have been ahead of time then two years ago. Nowadays it would perfectly fit into the range and overall marketing hype of absolute portable netbooks and so called ultra mobile computer devices.

However what I always hate is, that Lenovo and it’s designer team do often make very promising design study concepts (for example like the Houdini concept, just to name another one), which then finally never will make it over to ever become a mass product. – And then some time later the one or other competitor comes out with something like that successfully on the market as a real product.

Next time I would like to hear a story about some Lenovo concept, which will also get a real chance for marketability!

  • Daniel says:

All in all a nice concept. Two remarks:

How about opening, rotating by 180 degrees, and folding back the display, instead of opening 360 degrees? This way the keyboard would be covered and invisible while in tablet mode.

Also remember not everybody likes leather – I’d personally prefer a plain black magnesium out shell – like my ThinkPad. It might not feel or look as “warm” as leather, but it suits my style.

  • Matt says:

Concepts are easy, anyone can make a desirable device if there is nothing inside. Whether this product is any good depends on a whole pile of things that have not been mentioned: keyboard feel, processing power, battery life, heat, tablet operation, whether that mouse would even work.

Designers fill the web with concepts everyday, this thing could not and will not be built. Why do you think the sony costs a fortune?

First, Lenovo should learn the art of secrecy from Apple. :-)

Second, Lenovo doesn’t have an obligation to be ‘open’ and ‘transparent’ with its unreleased products at all. Your obligations are to the shareholders, employees and customers of Lenovo, not to bloggers. You don’t gain much by disclosing and further elaborating on what ought to be trade secrets.

The rest of the world don’t need to be whispered how cool Lenovo is, they need to be *shown* that with actual products folks can buy and enjoy. Don’t be confused about the *business* you’re in.

Would Lenovo consider producing this product in a different format? Scaled down with Android operating system installed? This would be a killer netbook. Different applicance, different price, different audience, killer netbook. Hope Lenovo is listening.

  • Bill Wood says:

My perfect netbook would be a 10 inch 1024×640 (16:10) black matte Thinkpad with a TrackPoint and a TrackPad. Those extra 40 pixels would allow a bit more room for the task bar and also to have a larger trackpad.

  • vkyr says:

May I ask what you need an additional TrackPad for, if such a small sized device will already come along with a touch or even multi-touch sensitive screen?

A space saving and good working Trackpoint would make IMO much more sense here for such a small device, in order to offer more room for a usable keyboard when using the device in a common notebook like fashion instead of the tablet mode.

  • VT says:

This is the most beautiful tablet ever designed.

Fujitsu tablets have good specs, but they are always thicker & bulkier than necessary. Sony new netbook is small, but they’re not tablets.

I don’t know why Lenovo doesn’t make it. It’ll be the best selling tablet, if its specs are good and its manufacturing quality could be as good as the design.

  • Sera says:

like VT said, this thing will absolutely be a killer product of the year,no doubt!!

Lenovo need to show something really stunning to people on earth other than buying Thinkpad.

    Perfect concept. Right…

Here’s what would make this thing killer:

Lose the mouse thing. We have no need for it really, it looks awesome, but actual practical use is limited.

Put a track pad in the middle and configure the keyboard accordingly. It doesnt have that, half of your fans wont buy it.

At least 2 usb slots. i would rather have 3 or 4 personally, because i would use this for everything. Hear that? Everything. I need one for the external hard drive, one for the ipod, and one for the miscallaneous device that just has to be plugged in right now.

Dual boot standard: Linux, Android or something close to that coupled with the new Windows 7 netbook style. You know, slimmed down and ready for Business. Use the Linux/Andriod for your media. It’ll give them some incentive to get thier drivers right for everything from ex hard drives to hd quality audio.

Battery needs a useful function: switchout. I want to be able to plug something that has power into the usb slot and have the netbook pull power off of that until I have time to insert my other battery in. I would also desire at least 5 hours of battery life, but running Windows thats not likely is it?

Want to contact me about this? Post something up on Engadget. Like the release of your killer notebook thats gonna take the world by storm.

    MUST! HAVE! NOW!

Absolutely slobber-inducing and breathtaking in its beauty, design and functionality.

In fact, I’m gonna hold my breath in a big old fashion hissy fit until someone tells me these are real and are for sale.

Okay, gonna hold my breath on 3. 1…2…3!!!

This is what we have been waiting for for *ten years*, a spiritual successor to the Psion 5.

Add a trackpoint and I’m sold (along with a hundred thousand others). Just don’t force me to run Windows on it.
