Stripes Feedback

What a reaction to the post and poll about stripes and ThinkPad. You clearly have a position on stripes and we agree. We plan on putting the stripes back at the earliest date possible. Changes like this are complex due to tooling costs, lead times, and other manufacturing or supply chain constraints. We plan on continued use of this blog as a forum for discussing ThinkPad future design. Thanks for the feedback.

No David, thank you for listening!

We’ve been giving “feedback” amongst ourselves on the internet for a long time.

We now thank you for joining the conversation!

  • informatik says:

    Thank you for listening.

  • Puppy says:

And please revert back to the slim display frame. The thick one on T61 looks cheap and ugly.

  • Selim says:

Is it possible to keep the layout of the keyboard and also give the “older” users (like T60, T61, Z6x and so on) the opportunity to get some of these changed keyboards? The design now, expect for the color, is very good i think.
So the customer can change keyboard by themself and keep smiling on the new color stripes =)

Can you give us your opinion about this please?

That will be great to change my keyboard in the T60p to another one with stripes!

    Regards,

    Selim

  • nalin513 says:

thank you! Feels great to know that the wisdom of the crowd is directly impacting future thinkpad designs. More polls please…

  • Keivan says:

I totally agree with Selim, please, please, please if you added the stripes, can you make a new keyboard for T60/P available so we can buy the keyboard and replace it with our stripe less one.

    again, thanks for listening.

  • Peter says:

Great! It means alot this. Lenovo, as a company, listening to it’s consumers directly.

  • Charlie Liou says:

    Thanks God!!!

You(Lenovo)finally heard what thinkpad fans’ voice!!!

Who was the guy told you “No Negative Feedback” upon colour stripes removal? He must be the undercover sent from other laptop manufacturers!!

  • Kevin Bowling says:

These blogs are the greatest things to happen to the venerable ThinkPad!

  • Khalifa says:

Thanks David please put another poll for S-video

  • Eric Giles says:

Thank you for listening to us-I know that I greatly appreciate it.

  • Daniel Teasley says:

    Thanks!

I agree with Puppy…what gives with the T-series thick display bevel? The thin version on the T4x looks a lot less cheap (much like manufacturers that build one chassis for multiple-sized screens).

  • ab says:

And, what’s that you say. A new poll. This time on 4:3 screens. Good idea.

  • Martin says:

    It’s a good news.
I can understand that Lenovo want to find owen way. But I can’t not understand why to change that like symbol design?!
However ,it will be back finally. This is a really good news for ThinkPad’s fans.

  • cation says:

Thank you for listening to the voice of customers!
    Thank you, lenovo!

  • Qin says:

I’m very glad to hear that.
Anything in the IBM ThinkPad has it’s position.
Do not ventured to change it.
    And thank you.

  • John says:

FEEL FREE TO CHANGE IT AFTER AUGUST, BUT DON’T CHANGE IT NOW. I ACTUALLY WANT MY NEW R61 WITHOUT THE STRIPES!

  • luke says:

    i like Stripes!!!!

  • Selim says:

I will buy some stripes this week (red and blue/lila ones) cut them in the right shape and glue them on the buttons =)it could be nice!

Maybe i will post the pics…i just have to see my T43p @ work to get a similar setup…

    regards,

    Selim

  • Roger says:

    WOW!!!
Fatanstic news, I will be expecting new one with stripes. Is it possible to supply some x60 or T60 keyboards with stripes? I think lots of fans would love to replace their keyboards with new ones.

  • vincent says:

I love ThinkPad and support to put the strips back.I have another question,Is there any possibility Lenovo will design and issue 12″ SXGA+ widescreed laptop? If there is ,when?

  • Lee says:

    cool. it’s back

  • Felix says:

    Dear David,

Whenever you add or remove a certain feature from a thinkpad, most of the feedback WILL be in form of complaints.
Competing against other manufacturers equals to continuous movement. Handing decisions in the “Design process” over to the blog reader will result in serious stagnancy of innovation – I won’t be surprised anymore if the T70 will look lika a T40 again, including the IBM label, that almost everyone of those people seems to demand.
Innovation? Progress? The thinkpads seem more and more like an everlasting retro edition.

Also, I hope you do know that a bunch of blog comments is not exactly what you’d call a representative set of customers’ opinions. Out of the 5 (very satisfied, btw) Thinkpad owners I know personally, I’m the only one to even care about participating in an internet poll about some colored buttons.

  • Felix says:

Let me clarify I meant internet feedback in my first sentence.

  • John says:

David, is it a matter of weeks or months? (I know you can’t give an absolute answer…)

  • tfflivemb2 says:

WOO HOO!!!! The stripes are back!!!

I am so happy that you guys are listening to us….thanks!

  • Snife says:

Well I hope you people are happy with yourself. I’m not that bothered if they put the strips back (although they match the 80s IBM logo and not the new ThinkPad one) but i’d be seriously concerned that Lenovo will not attempt to evolve ThinkPad design in the future given such an uproar about such a small, insignificant change.

  • Charles says:

I voted yes for the return of the Strips…But I can also concured with felix statment…Designs should move forward. With thinkpad’s “classic” image..it’s difficult to break out of the existing “mold” and find the right balance between Innovation without alienating its existing fan base..its alittle bite like when Coke try to bring out the “New Coke”…but not too many people wanted the “new Coke”..I guess thats what make it a “classic”
I think Lenovo should take a look at Asus’s design on notebooks…(I do not own any of them) but ‘looking’ at them..they really look sharp, fresh and exciting..(design wise)..Iam looking forward to the next generation thinkpads…

  • EMO says:

I appreciate your openness to hear users’ opinions while I personally do not need the strips. I am looking forward to find newly evolved buttoms which have not only the stripes but also new shape and touch. In addition, I want to suggest another poll on silver paints on power and volume buttoms since I think most users will not bother to keep these paints either.

  • Snife says:

Acer boxes should not even be considered for ThinkPad inspiration – their systems could not be more consumer based, I have been liking HPs evolving design for its business models, they are really starting to get that black box ThinkPad feel about them.

  • cxls says:

YES! 21st century ThinkPads get to look like 1990s machines again. W0000T!

My T60p: first, best, and last ThinkPad I will ever buy.

  • myuser says:

    ????????????????

  • QuadroFX says:

    Brilliant! Thank you for listening.

  • Jon Pritchard says:

Wow, I can’t believe I almost missed this news. Wonderful news. Thanks for listening. *pats on the back*

  • Alex Jung says:

I am so excited to hear this!! Like many people said here, though, it would be even better if Lenovo would make striped keys for older systems too (such as T60, and X60)! Lastly, thank you for listening!!

  • ?? says:

    ???????????????????????

  • Mike P. says:

Nice, thanks for listening to your customers. A bigger gripe for me though, is how cheap-looking the ThinkPad media buttons have become. Before they used to be black on a glossy black strip of plastic. Was this specifically a usability decision to make the buttons silver and blue in their own ridge, or was this just a legacy-design thing that IBM would not let Lenovo use going forward on their future ThinkPads?

  • ???? says:

But LENOVO is still a bad company.
    I am shamed about Lenovo,as a Chinese.

  • multivee says:

Boo to changing a well-considered design change on a whim (especially a webpoll). I beg you, please don’t make a poll regarding touchpads on 12 inch notebooks; I don’t think I could stuff the ballot in opposition enough times to make my opinion matter!

  • sapibobo says:

Thank you for listening. I never owned an T4X series before (mine is Z) but i can see why so many die hard fans here desire that stripes!

  • patrick yeh says:

I really like and appreciate thr colour scheme of ThinkPad stripes.

  • Siri says:

Dynamite! Please give us sticker strips until you can get them back into the manufacturing.

  • Rickpot says:

I really love the stripes on thinkpad, please stay our thinkpad in good looking in the future series. Although I am using T42 and going to buy another X61, always support thinkpad.

  • chiuchen says:

we’d better go on with history embeded!
    just keep the stripes logo!

Does “at the earliest date possible” mean T62 or T70??? Please tell it if it’s the case.

  • Mike P says:

    Much ado about nothing, IMHO.

While you are fretting whether your laptop mouse buttons should have stripes, Apple is creating innovative designs.

This comes from someone who is considering a Lenovo (currently own an HP laptop).

Stripes are totally irrelevant, except to designers and marketing types who believe form trumps function.

  • Jason404 says:

Please bring back the grey function keys as well, and never, ever even think about changing the blue return key!!!

  • Klaus says:

Seems like X300 and X200 have them. And even those SL “wannabe-ThinkPads” have them. But T400, T500, R400, R500, W500 and W700 all haven’t got them.

“We plan on putting the stripes back at the earliest date possible.”

    Should have been:

“We plan on putting the stripes back to a very narrow range of models, but certainly not on those which have the biggest outlet.”
