Lenovo System ToolBox

Lenovo has quietly launched Lenovo System ToolBox, though most of the world has no idea that it even exists.  You probably have not heard of it, but if you’ve ever used one of our desktops or our laptops, I guarantee that you had its precursor installed (or if you’re in a corporate environment, HAD it installed until your IT department did its thing).  That program was PC Doctor Diagnostics.

We’ve been stuck on version 5 of PC Doctor for quite a while.  I remember joining the company some years ago and we were shipping version 5 then.  Many of our systems shipping today still have it sitting right there on the Start menu.  Assuming you are like me, you probably launched it once, just to kick the tires, and then promptly forgot about it or uninstalled it to reclaim some disk space.

If you’ve had to call our tech support team about a hardware issue, perhaps they’ve had you run one of the diagnostic tools included in the package.  The test for a failed hard disk was partciuarly onerous.  It could take an hour or more to run, and as drives became bigger, the test took increasingly longer to complete its test run.

After a long time, Lenovo has introduced the follow on product, Lenovo System ToolBox.  This is not PC Doctor, version 6.  This is a completely new and integrated toolset that includes diagnostic utilities, system health indicators, and a variety of reports and status dashboards to make demystifying what’s wrong with your system very easy, while providing a powerful set of utilities for the more technically adept.  It’s also a lot faster than the old PC Doctor ever was.

I had the opportunity to sit down with Jeff Dadich, Lenovo Product Manager for System ToolBox and Paul Fallon of PC Doctor who developed the tool for us.  Mark Hopkins of Lenovo Connections fame was Director of this video production.  Though he does not appear on camera, we’re indebted to him for helping us.  The following video is about 5 minutes in length.  There is a brief introduction from me.  Following that, Jeff speaks about why we updated this tool.  Finally, Paul takes us on a very brief tour of the new interface, highlighting just a few of the new features while showing actual screen shots.  Whether you’re a newbie or a hardcore geek, there’s something in this new tool for you.

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

There are many more parts to System ToolBox than we had time to highlight in the video.  For example, System ToolBox will tell you precisely how many days are left until your warranty expires and the type of warranty support you’re entitled to.  In my opinion, that feature alone makes it worth installing.

If you have a Lenovo system, you’re entitled to download and run this tool at no charge.  This includes ThinkCentre, ThinkPad, ThinkStation, and Lenovo 3000 systems running XP or Vista and released after January 2004.  If in doubt, go ahead and download it.  It will tell you if you’re not elegible.  Then give it a go and let us know what you think.

I want to commend Lenovo for producing software that:
    1. Works
    2. Actually helps out a lot

    Which leads to…
    3. Being the only computer OEM whose software I recommend for reinstallation after reformatting a new computer.

    Keep up the good work!

  2. Dan Says:

Great job with the new toolbox! Like you said, it is nice seeing the warranty and serial information right up there on top. The other feature that is really awesome is the Drive Space Manager I really like how it breaks it down by file type or folder. A couple years ago I remember searching for a utility that would do that exact same thing to see where all my free space is being eaten up! Not something I would use every day, but when I need it – it is invaluable.

Thanks for everyone’s work on this – it is great!

  3. brad Says:

I like it, but the text of the alerts on my machine (XP, with a 20 inch Lenovo monitor) is microscopically small and I can’t find a way to make it big enough to read. The settings and options menus don’t provide any way to make the text bigger. It is literally too small to read; I can’t tell what the alerts say. Also, in the help file the search function doesn’t seem to work yet…when I typed in “text size” and hit “search,” nothing happened. It should at least tell me that the search string wasn’t found.

  4. Matt Kohut Says:

Brad — I know the PC Doctor folks are monitoring this post carefully. I’ll see if I can get Paul or a member of the team to be able to comment in the next couple of days on issues like this. Obviously, we want to get it fixed.

  5. erik Says:

matt – the same thing happens on my thinkstation D10 running server 2008 enterprise x64.   text is so minuscule it’s unreadable.   this also happens with various system tools (gpedit.msc and services.msc to name a few) as well as internet explorer 8 beta on sites with incomplete or improperly-written style sheets.   at first glance it looks like a microsoft bug in how certain text fields are handled.

  6. Wilson Says:

Matt, I think Lenovo’s applets are both economical with resources and very useful. I had to insist strongly (not to be confused with force) to get the IT people in my office to include that and several Lenovo other applets in the so-called “corporate image.” IT personnel, like other engineers, tend to be conservative and to like only what they know works all the time without causing problems for them. It’s very difficult to sell them on OEM applets like these, especially when they’re looking at rolling out a large number of laptops (if anyone is these days). However, Lenovo will gain a lot of word of mouth positive reputation if you can showcase these to IT people who are in the decision chain for hardware purchases; they are used to calling all OEM applets “bloatware” and less flattering terms.

    Hi folks,
Thank you for the feedback. I can’t seem to duplicate the font problem Erik and Brad are referring to. Would someone kindly send me a screenshot of the issue to help me duplicate it so I can get it resolved?

Windows only? You can say most of your customers use windows, but its a chicken and egg problem. Weak tools support leads to lower OS adoption. Ubuntu is great in my T61.

  10. brad Says:

I’ve posted a screenshot here (94K jpeg file):

    http://www.firescribble.net/Im.....enshot.jpg

I’m using a Lenovo A61e with a 20-inch LCD monitor. I use Internet Explorer 8, if that factors into the rendering equation.

  11. brad Says:

whoops, sorry I meant that I use IE 7, not 8. As you can see the menu items are fine, it’s the alert text itself that is too small to read.

  12. Paul Fallon Says:

    Thanks Brad.
I was able to duplicate the problem by setting my text size in Internet Explorer to Very Small. Lenovo System Toolbox uses the embedded Internet Explorer browser control so the font settings in Internet Explorer carry over.

Can you please confirm that if you set your text size to medium in internet exlorer the text becomes readable? You can also make the text very huge (and ugly) if you set the text size to very large. You have to restart Lenovo System Toolbox for the setting to take affect.

The text size in IE can affect other applications as well which was mentioned in another post.

This should be fixed so that when very small is selected the text is larger than it is now. Please confirm that this is what is causing your issue and I will get a fix into the next maintenance release of the application.

    Thanks,

paul fallon – your suggestion worked.   my IE text settings were already on medium but setting them to large then back to medium reset the text size globally.

    thank you.

    Hello guys,

I discovered Lenovo system toolbox few weeks ago when i started Thinkvantage and system update.

I was looking on how to contact one of you guys and ask to write us a topic about this new toolbox, and that’s it !!!!

It works great, actually i’ve no complaint about this new toolbox.

But, i can’t understand why sometimes when i play Rise of nations on my T60 2007 FVG, i see a blue screen with this message “Call hardware vendor for support. NMI parity check/memory”.

My T60 have enough power to play on this game, so why the message ?

I don’t know if it’s a good place to post this message but i try.

  16. erik Says:

christian – forums.lenovo.com is a much better place to post tech questions.

  17. brad Says:

Thanks Paul — it worked for me too and I can now read the alerts just fine.

  18. Bryan Says:

Just to help you get some statistics, most of your customers use windows you say. As I type this, 2/18 use ubuntu … so great work maybe, but pointless if it’s not cross-platform. Go talk to the codeweavers guys
and see if a wee bit more effort will get you to 100% of your clients!

  19. vkyr Says:

Usually it is (or at least should be) mandatory for any Notebook vendor, to offer intelligent and well working made system and diagnostics tools. That’s the theory, but in practice there are always huge differences here in what vendors accomplish and offer together with or for their notebooks.

ThinkPads, to the best of my recollection, have always been slightly different and ideal here in this area, so it’s no real surprise for me, that Lenovo is going to make good things even better.

  20. Shelby Says:

    Sound interesting.

  21. Henrique Says:

It is pretty. It looks sleek. It is useful on a running system (unlike PC doctor :-) ). But does it run in a system that is not halfway there, as any diagnostic tool that is really usable must do, if it is to displace PC doctor?

Can I have it working on the service partition? Or from a bootable pendrive or CD?

Otherwise, what good is it for a hardware diagnostic tool? It would be at most a complement to PC Doctor then, from the hardware testing point of view…

So, please don’t remove PC doctor until the new tool can actually replace it.

  22. Paul Fallon Says:

    Henrique,
Thank you for your comments. You make some great points. PC-Doctor currently provides preboot diagnostics in the Rescue and Recovery partition in addition to the diagnostics in Lenovo System Toolbox.
If a system will not boot at all you can use the PC-Doctor DOS diagnostics on a bootable CD. To find the bootable CD image applicable to your system, go to the Lenovo support web site and navigate to downloads and drivers for your system and then look in the diagnostics category.

We will be adding a utlility to create a bootable diagnostics USB key or CD to Lenovo System Toolbox in the near future.

On that note. If anyone has any other suggestions for things they would like the application to do, please post your requests here.

    Thank you,
    Paul Fallon

  23. Jim Says:

This is a great utility. These are the best diagnostics I have seen in the 15 years I have been using notebook computers. Can this program be purchased so it will run on my non-Lenovo systems as well? I tried to install it and it said I was not authorized. :)

    Jim

  24. RayBay Says:

It continues to be important to note that this upgrade does not work on Thinkpads prior to 2004, so PC Doctor should continue to be prominently available.
Also, I do not have the screen problems on any of my computers that are described in the early postings by Brad.

  25. Philip Stoev Says:

Bloatware. 30 MB download for software that does nothing but provide a central location for a few things that are otherwise available separately. It takes ages to start up and shut down.

Switching between tabs requires that the hourglass appears for a second? Can it be any slower? The disk space usage pie-chart may be cool, but it takes ages to calculate and the application is not responsive while it is scanning the hard drive. A much more clever solution would be to scan the hard drive in the background.

  26. Chris Schumann Says:

Any chance there will be a Linux version soon?

  27. Kyle Says:

I can’t wait to try the Toolbox out. Will it function under Windows 2000 Professional?

  28. Paul Fallon Says:

    Hi Folks,
While PC-Doctor does have Linux diagnostics, there is no plan to provide a Linux version of Lenovo System Toolbox at this time. Lenovo is continuing to evaluate this.

Lenovo System toolbox only supports Windows XP, Windows Vista 32 and Windows Vista 64. Windows 2000 users should use PC-Doctor 5 for Windows.

Whenever I start the Lenovo System Toolbox, I get an error like “device discovery error – your system was busy…” and the program aborts. The error message makes absolutely no sense.

Nevertheless I stopped all unnecessary processes, turned off antivir, restarted the toolbox and rebooted the PC – all with no effect.

I have a T61 running Windows XP Professional.

In the web I found other people reporting the same fault.

  36. John Campbell Says:

Like Herbert H said, the System Toolbox has stopped working, with the same characteristics as he described. Updating to the latest version today had no effect. A bit discouraging.

  37. Nathan Says:

I found the same problem as Herbert H. with my account being disabled. I can’t believe they released this crap.

  38. Herbert H. Says:

As I found in several blogs and Thinkpad related websites there are many users out there complaining this fault. The problem seems to occur if the Firefox browser is installed. With a market share of Firefox of more than 20% (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozilla_Firefox) this problem should exisit on many ThinkPads.

Up to now I did not found any reaction of Lenovo on this problem. Is there anybody of Lenovo reading this blog????

  39. BK Says:

I have the same problem – persistent device discovery error with Firefox installed. I submitted this issue on the PC-Doctor web site – response predicted in 72 hours. I will be interested to see what they say.

  40. Daniel Says:

After testing my T43p’s hard drive (Hitachi) with the Toolbox’s quick test error free several times at first, it now started to recommend the advanced test each and every time (some unspecified SMART issue). When I do run that advanced test I never get any errors (also according to the Drive Fitness Test – and others – the hard drive is error free). I also tried this with my backup drive: Same behaviour

As the found errors are not named nor specified and as my drives are running fine and I doubt that they both got faulty at the same time, I’m wondering whether the Toolbox’s hard drive diagnostics might be giving wrong results.

Also for user convenience a more specific error report would be very helpful!

  41. JHC Says:

My Thinkpad Z60m was just updated with the Lenovo Systems Toolbox. On starting it, it reported an error as mentioned by Herbert H. I use firefox and will not uninstall it. Did BK get a response from PC-Doctor about a solution to this conflict? Please let us know. Is Lenovo working on this problem?

  42. Tom R Says:

I, too have Firefox installed and will not uninstall it in order to use this thing and in addition to not being able to run PC-Dco, I also cannot update system via Thinkvantage. What gives? Real crappy.

First of all, I apologize. I had no idea these complaints were coming in. I just happened to check-up on this thread tonight and saw these concerns. Maybe someone in this thread can tell me how I can be notified when this thread needs my attention. I am heads down working on a newer version of this application. I am not making excuses, I just had not seen any updates in a while so i stopped checking the thread. I also apologize the update to the application did not make it to the web in a timely fashion. I am working with Lenovo to make sure that does not happen again.

The error being reported is due to the system not being able to enumerate due to another conflicting process.

Anyone experiencing this error can contact me directly.
paul.fallon@pc-doctor.com I would like to get a copy of your logs to see what might be causing the problem.

There is a silent install option for the Toolbox application.
Lenovo System Toolbox is wrapped with a compression tool called Packege for the Web that Lenovo uses. Our base package accepts a /s option to silently install.
I will respond asap on how to fire off this option in conjunction with the PFTW compressed package.

    Thank you,

  60. Paul Fallon Says:

To install the program silently use the folling parameters.
    filename.exe -s -a /S
The -s and -a silently decropresses the package.
The -S silently installs the product.

    Thank you,

Our university recently switched from Gateway desktops to the Lenovo ThinkCentre 6209’s and I really don’t see any of the so-called advantages. The systems are using Windows Vista Enterprise and for a machine running 4GB of RAM, these are incredibly and painfully slow. Once the system boots up, it takes an entire 2 minutes before the “CLT-ALT-Delete” longon will respond to users.

    Definitely not a Lenovo fan.

I still have this problem — Even with the newest version.

    Device Discovery Error
Your system was busy performing other tasks when Lenovo System Toolbox attempted to collect information.
Click OK and restart the application.
If the error persists, restart the system.

Anyone find a solution? –besides uninstalling firefox?

  64. Steph B Says:

Just got a new t400s laptop with Windows 7 and supposedly all the latest and greatest software from Lenovo. Installed latest Firefox (3.5.5), and now, when I start the Thinkvantage Toolbox, I get the same “Device Discovery Error” as everyone.

  65. bobbyz Says:

    Steph,

I see this issue on my T400s as well. Without going into too much detail, this has to do with the discovery of a virtual wifi adapter on this system. There should be an update available in the coming week which will address this issue. I will send a message to this site as soon as this becomes available.

Love the Toolbox, but when I run the Drive Space Manager the scan stops at about 80k files.

    Any ideas?

More info – There’s still more than 50% of the drive unscanned when it stops at 80k files

I have a T500/Vista Ultimate SP2 which has just installed Toolbox 6.0.5449.29 as part of the ThinkVantage system update process.

Every time I run Toolbox, it tries to install “Roxio Creator Business Edition”. The installation fails with the following error box:

    Lenovo ThinkVantage Toolbox

Device Discovery ErrorIf there is an error, restart the application.

If the error persists, restart the application.

The device discovery process was unable to finish discovering devices. This may prevent you from running all available diagnostics or generating complete system information reports.

    OK

Note that “ErrorIf” is not a typing error.

I just downloaded and installed the new version of the Toolbox — but I can’t open it without getting the message ‘Lenovo Thinkvantage Toolbox has stopped working’. I’ve no idea how to troubleshoot this. I don’t even seem to be able to keep it from loading.

Upgraded to Windows 7, downloaded the new version of Toolbox and get the following error when I open it or press the “Blue” button. “Lenovo ThinkVantage Toolbox has stopped working”

Anyone know how to resolve this?
