Lenovo and RIM announce ConstantConnect

constantconnect_banner

We launched a new product this week – Lenovo ConstantConnect –  in partnership with Research In Motion (RIM), the owners of BlackBerry®  – great for the worldsourced exec on the go.  Available initially in the US,  the product will be rolled out in other regions.  ConstantConnect keeps you linked to e-mail at all times.  It allows enterprise e-mail on a user’s BlackBerry to be automatically synchronized via Bluetooth® onto the your ThinkPad – even if the ThinkPad is off – without the user having to take any additional steps.

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

“That means that when the ThinkPad boots up, new e-mail will already be loaded. There’s no need to establish a secure Internet connection to the employer’s servers.  The user will also be able to send e-mail from the ThinkPad through the BlackBerry without an additional Internet connection.” Associated Press

“Lenovo Constant Connect also serves as an alternative to 3G wireless services from Verizon and other companies, and — for e-mail only — can be faster and more efficient than instant-on solutions such as Phoenix Hyperspace and Splashtop, which still face problems related to Wi-Fi availability.” – Computerworld

I both hate and love to say this: that video demo fully solidifies Lenovo as the anti-Apple. That video has got to be the most amateur-looking corporate launch video ever! The complete lack of attention to any style cues is remarkable and in a bizarre way admirable and attractive. Scratch these: nice clothes, nice background, nice furniture, nice camera angle. And don’t even show the product in operation! So post bubble! So depression sensitive!

I do love Lenovo for this kind of thing any color as long as it’s black . . . timeless ThinkPad style etc . . . but I think this video goes a little too far!!

That’s a very good news. RIM and Thinkpads means business.

But could Lenovo do more corporate videos like old IBM’s ads ?

Question: The announcement says that email received will be synced…I assume that email typed and sent on the thinkpad can be sent through the blackberry as well? And does it work only with “enterprise email” push systems, or will it work with POP, IMAP, gmail, etc. type systems as well?

I’m not quite sure If I understand well the meaning of this tool. Blackberry is already checking your enterprise e-mail if you have a RIM server. Synchronize your laptop with your BlackBerry means you’re not fully taking advantage of your BlackBerry, meaning you’re not checking e-mails in real time. Did I understand well what ConstantConnect does?

    Thanks
